Unfortunately on Thursday 2nd August 2007, both our singles and triples lost at the Scottish Bowling National Championships held at Northfield Bowling Club in Ayr.
David Anderson got off to a flying start in his singles tie against his opponent Ross Carlin (Muirhead & Birkhill) by going 10-0 up after only 3 ends. He continued his superb form to reach 20-9 in front, however, his opponent began to find his range and with luck conspiring against David, the game reached 20-20. With his 3rd bowl, David touched the jack and lay approximately 6 inches from it to lie the shot. Ross Carlin then played a wonderful bowl to draw in front of David and sit directly behind the jack. With everyone holding their breath, David’s last bowl looked to be perfect, however, at the last moment just held and didn’t move the shot bowl far enough from the jack. At the end of an exhilirating game, Ross Carlin won by 21-20.
Over at the triples, a similar story occurred. The Miners triples (Derek Houston, Mark Renwick, Stuart Leary) got off to a flying start and went 10-1 up after only 5 ends against their opponents from Yoker. From then on, the game turned on its head and the true “game of 2 halves” unfolded. The Yoker team began to find their feet and again, the luck conspired against our team. The game ended at the 14th end with Yoker winning by 22-10.
Although everyone concerned with Motherwell Miners is disappointed for the players, we are all extremely proud of their achievement in reaching this prestigious stage and for providing us with two tremendous and memorable matches. There is no question that these guys will return to Northfield in the very near future and will fulfil their own ambitions. Maybe next year!
